SURNAMES IN MY FAMILY TREE.

The main surnames which appear in my tree are :-

ARCHER - The obvious starting place.

The Archer family have been traced back to 1720, at the birth of Richard Archer in Leintwardine. The family stayed in the Leintwardine area for a number of generations.
In later years ancestors moved to Fownhope, Stretton Sugwas and Preston Wynne, before my granfather married and settled in Hope Under Dinmore.

ATKINS - The Atkins name joined my tree with grandad, Wilfred Archer marrying Mary Atkins in 1922. The Atkins family were living in Hope Under Dinmore, where many ancestors can be found. Wilfred and Mary lived at Buskwood Farm for many years. This is an area of 5 or 6 small holdings which can be found at the back of Queen'sWood. Mary's parents, Joseph and Charlotte, and grandparents, William and Mary, had also lived at Buskwood Farm.
The Atkins ancestors have been traced back to 1732, at the birth of Thomas Atkins, and never moved far from the Wellington, Marden, Bodenham, Dinmore area during this time.

MUTLOW - The maiden name of my mother, and therefore another name which appears regularly in my tree.
Mutlow is not a very popular surname, but still hard to reseach. I have got stuck at Thomas Mutlow, reportedly born 1799,in Woolhope.
What I do know, is that the Mutlow's lived in the Woolhope, Mordiford, Dinedor area between the birth of Thomas, in 1827 and Albert, my great grandad, in 1876. Albert had 3 son's, of which my grandad James was one. James, born 1907, moved to north Herefordshire, where he married Mary Watkins and lived in the Dilwyn, Weobley and Monkland areas.

WATKINS- The 4th of my grandparents.
Grandmother Mary was born in Wormbridge, to parents James and Ellen.James was the first generation of the family born in this area, as previous ancestors had moved here from Wellington.

Other Surnames which appear in my tree are :-
BAILEY. - these are on the Mutlow branch, follwing the marriage of Thomas Mutlow and Anne Bailey.
PREECE. - also on the Mutlow branch, William Mutlow married Emma Preece in Dinedor, while Anne Mutlow , William's sister, married James Preece, Emma's brother. The Preece ancestors lived around Aconbury and Dinedor back to 1775.
FIELD. - GreatGrandad, Albert Mutlow married Annie Field, from Bosbury. However the Field family had moved around alot, Annie was born in Glamorgan( but we forgive her), but her father was from Ledbury, where the family had been for a number of generations.
STRANGWOOD. - This was the maiden name of Thomas Watkins wife Ellen, born 1884. The name was however spelt Strangward on her fathers birth record. Lived in the Kimbolton and Aymestrey areas.
HEAPY. - Ellen Strangward's mother was born Mary Heapy in 1848, in Yarpole. This branch appears to have lived in the Yarpole area from at least 1782, when Mary's grandfather William was born.

The names PROBERT, JAMES, MILES, EDWARDS and LANE all appear in the ARCHER branch of the tree, at various points over the last 260 years.

The names EVANS, MIDDLETON, CASTREE and RAWLINGS are found in the ATKINS branch of the tree.

This is just a basic introduction to the surnames which my family tree contains. A more detailed examination of these surnames, and a closer look at some individuals will follow.

Family History.

Herefordshire is a beautiful county, in the heart of English countryside, close to the Welsh border. My ancestors have lived in these parts for over 250 years, and I have researched them across various villages, in all parts of the county. Over coming months this site will be used to share information about my ancestors, in the hope of finding more contacts who can further my research, while including information about the history of the county.
